I have been contemplating participating in this project, because it sounds like an interesting challenge and so much intriguing fic has been coming out of it. But I was hesitating because 1) I was having a hard time thinking of a character I wanted to do and 2) so many projects omg.
Then last night, during chorus, it occurred to me that I could combine the alphabet with something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: write a series of stories based on music. Not inspired by individual pieces of music, but by music theory. By the terminology, forms, language of music. So many musical concepts can also apply to storytelling: tempo, rhythm, pacing, flow. Also, I am very music focused — I would listen to it every waking moment if it were practical to do so — and have been a choral singer for almost my whole life. So this juxtaposition is a natural for me, and before I consciously realized what I was doing, I was coming up with musical terms for each letter of the alphabet. As I did so, I realized that I already had a character in mind for the person whose story this could tell: Marissa Hawke, my aggressive mage; she’s not my canon Hawke, but she fascinates me and I want to explore her further. When I got home last night, I finished the alphabet (not an easy task, and a couple of the later letters are subject to change) and drafted the first two stories. Look for them both to go up today.
I hope this project is interesting to some folks and not unbearably pretentious. ;) The second bit above, about too many projects, remains the case, so my plan is to make these stories flashfic: written fairly quickly, not agonized over for days or weeks or months or years (you think I’m kidding). We’ll see how that part goes! At the very least, I have a goal to finish by the end of February.
Update: first story posted! This is now the master post. Also available on AO3.
